Linking 1D ESTRY Channel with 2D Domain

Hi,

I am trying to link two watercourses to the 2D domain by means of CN and HX lines (see attached plan). I have tried running the model with this configuration (CN lines in green, HX lines in pink and XS lines in blue), however, although the model runs relatively smoothly, water is backing up at the downstream end of the 1D channel and not spilling into the 2D domain.

I have also added a z line (brown line) with z points snapped to it to represent the invert level of the channel as the LiDAR is around 0.3-0.4m higher.

Does anyone know why flow is not being transferred to the 2D domain?

Hi Paul

It is hard to tell from the diagram but do your hx lines go across the channel, as it appears that they are only connected to the end of the xs lines only. If they do great, if not the HX needs to go across the full width of the channel to ensure flows can enter the 2d domain.

It may be worth looking at the R.L levels of your xs line, 1d_nwk and z line to ensure that are all at the same starting level.

You also mentioned that the levels in your 2D domain are higher then the channel invert, you may need to use a 2d_zsh file to lower the whole channel section an ensure flows enter the 2d domain smoothly.

One final thing to check is the "n" values of your 2D domain where the channel connects to the 2d domain. The "n" value may be high and restricting flows from entering the 2d domain.

Hi Paul

Can you please add the 1d_to_2d_check layer to the image, and maybe use bolder styles to make the lines clearer. The 1d_to_2d_check layer will show which 2D cells have been selected by the HX lines, and the colours of the cells will help indicate which 1D node they've been allocated to so we can check the CN lines are working OK. The cells' attributes also provide additional information on which 1D node they're connected to, etc.

Using TUFLOW_to_GIS with the -mif -arrow options might also be useful (see Section 11.2 of the manual) for us to view the flow patterns as scaled arrows (or an image via SMS or other result viewing software).
